Bake a batch of these to give to your horse as a special training treat.
Cook a bit longer if you want a drier / crunchy treat.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup quick oats
- 1 cup oat bran
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1 cup molasses
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 ºF (180 ºC).
Grease a square baking tray (about 9 inches x 9 inches).
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
Add molasses.
Mixture should be sticky but not wet. If wet, add more flour. If the mixture is too dry, add more molasses.
Spread mixture evenly in the tray.
Bake for 20 – 30 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow the mixture to cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
Cut it into small squares.
Put the squares in an airtight container for storage.
UPDATE: In the middle of a very hot summer in Australia I found out (the hard way) that these treats can become sticky. Best used on cooler days 🙂
Do you want to have fun and create a very special bond with your horse? Try trick training…
Can’t wait to try these on my horses – I have never baked them anything before and I have a lot of training I want to do. Thanks for the recipe
Enjoy the treats and the training Margaret 🙂
I often use apple as a treat
I make a similar treat.
I run two apples thru the food processor skin, core and all.
Then i add quick oats and flour until its firm enough to roll into bite or pocket size balls.
If you bake them in a cake pan and then try to cut, they are too hard. So make the balls and bake @ 300 for 20-25 minutes.
Let them cool completely. I store them in a paper bag air tight containers make them mold.
I have found the dryer and harder they are, the more they like them.
Thanks for the suggestions Ydia 🙂 I will give this a try. Jain.
I processed oats into flour and substituted that for the wheat flour and used 1/2 honey 1/2 molasses; worked great.
That’s good to hear KD. I must try this version 🙂 Jain.
You could always freeze any treats you make. They would last much longer then
Yes. Excellent idea Carol 🙂 It would be good to make a big batch, freeze them and then just get them out as you need them.

hi – i’ve got a can of malt extract that i’ve not used – tempted to use it for this.
In Australia too – canberra in fact so i’m not worried about them going off!
Hi Kate,
Malt extract could be a yummy addition 🙂
It’s cold here (country NSW) now so these treats are keeping well, even out of the fridge.
Jain.
How long do these keep? I made some apple chews once but they went mouldy in a few days 🙁 My pony loves treats but needs them in moderation haha
Hi Emi,
I find the apple chews last about 2 weeks if I store them in an air-tight container in the fridge.
I made a BIG batch of these molasses ones about 2 months ago. I cooked them longer so they were crunchy. I stored them in sealed plastic bags in the fridge and they are still good 🙂

Hi! I was wondering if you could use honey instead of molasses in this recipe 🙂 my horse isn’t too fond of molasses but loves honey. Thanks!
Hi Ashley,
I’m no cook 🙂 but I did just google molasses / honey substitution and apparently you can use honey in place of molasses. Several websites say to use it in the same quantity.
Let me know how you go with it. It would be good to find out if honey works as well as molasses 🙂
Jain.
Lol I live in Australia 2 thanks for the tip
Hello fellow Aussie! 🙂
